Tortie baby and calico mama

This is Jubilee the calico and her baby Katniss, the tortie who is using her for a pillow.

:-) I adopted both of them in early December. The mama cat isn't much more than a kitten herself. She's about 14 months old. Katniss is my third tortie, but Jubilee is my first calico.

These two are gorgeous! I never really thought about the fact that a mama calico would produce a tortie baby ... HM. Baby Katniss looks very comfy on mom's back -- kids, they just take moms for granted, don't they? :D

There were three kittens in the litter -- Katniss the tortie, an orange boy kitten and a black boy kitten. It's like the black and orange genes combined in Katniss. I wonder if her father was an orange tabby.

That's where calicos and torties come from! Her litter was like a genetics chart!

You might like the book Cats Are Not Peas, that explains how cats inherit various traits, including calico/tortie.
